Childhood Uninterrupted: AIM’s Commitment to Street-Connected Kids

Children living on the streets are exposed to a daily reality of insecurity, hunger, and emotional neglect. Their development is stunted not just by poverty but by the absence of protection and opportunity. AIM Foundation recognizes this harsh truth and works relentlessly to create safer spaces and better futures for these children.

In Kolkata’s high-density areas, AIM runs consistent outreach programs for street-connected children. During the COVID-19 lockdown, these children were among the hardest hit—cut off from food sources, schools, and any form of institutional support. AIM stepped in with ration kits and hygiene supplies, ensuring survival during one of the city’s darkest periods.

But survival was just the beginning. AIM's focus has always been long-term engagement. Once immediate needs were met, AIM built relationships with these children and their families. These connections paved the way for enrollment in education centres, introduction to digital learning, and the launch of co-curricular activities that support emotional healing.

Through art, storytelling, dance, and informal group learning, these children began to reimagine their identities—not as forgotten street kids, but as learners and creators. Volunteers and facilitators trained in trauma-informed care help build trust, something many of these children had never experienced.

Mental health support is subtly woven into all activities. Children are encouraged to express themselves, discuss fears, and navigate their feelings through creative tools. Health camps further support them with vaccinations, nutrition supplements, and dental check-ups.

AIM Foundation believes that every child, no matter their background, deserves dignity, security, and the chance to dream. Their work with street-connected children turns neglect into nurturing and chaos into structure. These small but powerful interventions change not just lives but legacies.
